International Students Invited to Training Session for GoinGlobal, New Job Search Software

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Jan. 23, 2017) ― GoinGlobal is a new software that facilitates the job search process for all University of Kentucky students. The software provides students, faculty and staff with access to a toolkit of resources, which include guides to major cities and countries around the world, internship and job opportunities, and data on cost of living, among many other resources.

At 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 24, in the James W. Stuckert Career Center, the UK International Center will host a GoinGlobal Training Session to inform international students on how to use this new tool, recently made available to all UK students.

During the session, students will learn about the H1-B visa database and how to use GoinGlobal’s resources to research companies interested in hiring foreign workers. The training session will provide students with a realistic understanding of work permit and visa requirements, as well as financial considerations and other critical factors that will help students in succeeding in the workforce.

Elizabeth Leibach, International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) director, emphasized the achievement of bringing GoinGlobal to UK’s campus.

“ISSS worked with several college partners and the Stuckert Career Center to advocate for the purchase of GoinGlobal. We were attracted to the Employer Directory, the H-1B database and Global City and Country Guides which are available to all students seeking careers at home or abroad,” Leibach said.

Ray Clere, assistant dean for career and academic exploration at the Stuckert Career Center, was excited to introduce the software as well.

“GoinGlobal is one of the most comprehensive web-based resources for international students seeking knowledge and connection points with employers for employment opportunities in the United States. GoinGlobal also provides cross-cultural résumé/CV (curriculum vitae) guidelines, and country-specific information for students interested in career and employment opportunities abroad,” Clere said.

Miko McFarland, executive director of Education Abroad and Exchanges, also emphasized the software’s benefits for those students interested in finding a job overseas.

“We expect graduates to seek international career opportunities and this website serves as an excellent starting point. For example, business practices, interview settings and working culture can be vastly different in other countries, so we want to provide students with the right tools to be successful in their job search,” McFarland added.

Some of the highlights of the session will include learning how to identify U.S. employers seeking to hire international professionals through H1-B visa petitions and how to connect this information to current job opportunities. Another will be learning how to connect specific degrees with these hiring opportunities by identifying key employers and industry contacts for informational interviews and study abroad networking. This will all be possible with GoinGlobal’s searchable H1-B database, which dates to 2009.

Sue Roberts, associate provost for internationalization, said she is particularly thrilled with the collaborations across campus to fund GoinGlobal.

“I am so pleased that all UK students will now have access to this valuable resource as they consider options after graduation,” Roberts said.

Sponsoring offices include the UK International Center, the James W. Stuckert Career Center, the Graham Office of Career Management in the Gatton College of Business and Economics, and Engineering Career Development in the College of Engineering.
