K Week: Learning to Learn

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Aug. 18, 2012) -- Today the University of Kentucky is swarming with new students and their families, all anxious to learn as much as they can about this new academic experience.

That desire is answered by the events of K Week. Coordinated by the Office of New Student and Parent Programs in the Division of Student Affairs, K Week is UK’s fall welcome week for freshmen and transfer students.

Besides all the receptions, open houses, orientations, cookouts, tours and lunches, there are information sessions about safety, personal finances, health, local transportation and other extracurricular concerns.

Among the most popular events today focus on academic success. The Study staff will explain how they can help freshmen and transfer students succeed in their first year. Sometimes the names of a session are self-explanatory -- “Succeeding in a Large Lecture Classroom,” “Write Right: Tips for Writing Well in College” and “You Heard It Here First: Tips from a Faculty Member,” with one of UK’s most popular professors Alan DeSantis.

Parents also have events just for them, including “A Parent’s Guide to Life After August 18,” Parental Involvement in Fraternity and Sorority Life” and “Parents Watch for Warning Signs: Suicide prevention for College Students.”

The highlight of the day, however, is the New Student Induction Ceremony where UK President Eli Capilouto and other administrators and faculty leaders officially commemorate the launch of the academic year.
