Lyman T. Johnson Awards Honor Students

LEXINGTON, Ky. (April 1, 2011) — The 30th annual Lyman T. Johnson Student Awards Banquet will take place on Wednesday, April 6, at 6:30 p.m. in the UK Student Center Grand Ballroom.

This event, sponsored by the UK Black Student Union, is designed to recognize outstanding student achievement in the areas of scholarship, leadership and service.  It is named in honor of Dr. Lyman T. Johnson, the legendary human rights champion whose landmark legal victory in 1949 resulted in the desegregation of the University of Kentucky.

The featured speaker for the banquet is Wayne Lewis, assistant professor in the UK College of Education.

Ronald Harrison, LTJ Banquet Planning Committee chairman, said, “This banquet is the premier event in the calendar year of the UK Black Student Union. As our culminating program, it allows us to give recognition and appreciation to the achievements of African American students and other students of multicultural backgrounds. It is our effort to pay homage and respect to the legacy of Lyman T. Johnson, who we regard as our great forerunner.”

The tickets for the banquet are $8 students, $10 faculty and $13 general public.  A table of eight can be purchased for $60.  Persons interested in purchasing tickets should contact committee member Miguel Douglin at (502) 777-6691 or at Miguel.doughlin@uky.edu.
