LEXINGTON, Ky. (Feb. 13, 2023) — The University of Kentucky Office of LGBTQ* Resources, a unit housed in the Office for Student Success, is now accepting applications for three student scholarships. The David Mundry Memorial Scholarship, the Tuesday Meadows Endowed Scholarship and the UKY Office of LGBTQ* Resources Scholarship are available for students to apply through BBNvolved.

J’Lissabeth Faughn, director of the Office of LGBTQ* Resources, believes now more than ever, the presence of the LGBTQ community in higher ed is imperative, enabling scholars to obtain the education they may not have access to otherwise.

“By creating access to scholarships and other financial opportunities, LGBTQ individuals can better shape cultural progress,” Faughn said. “Unfortunately, so many of our queer scholars, and I do mean our scholars here at UK, have very little or no contact or financial support from their families, and many of our scholars are legally emancipated from their parents, due to the discrimination they faced at home.”

Applications to the below scholarships close on Tuesday, Feb. 28, 2023, at 11:59 p.m.

David Mudry Memorial Scholarship

David Mudry was an alumnus of UK. In life, Mudry was an outspoken advocate for LGBTQ* people. He was an aspiring drag queen, a huge Nintendo fan and a lover of all animals (especially dogs). Mudry always found ways to lift up others, even in their lowest moments. He was the kindest, most supportive and most loving person you could ever meet. His presence is sorely missed in the lives of those he loved and those who loved him. It is fitting to carry on Mudry's legacy, honor his life and remember him by lending his name to this scholarship for young members of the LGBTQ* community at UK. While a student at UK, Mudry worked at the university bookstore. This experience showed him, up close, that many students struggled to pay for their books and course materials. He always went out of his way to help those students. This scholarship is intended to help supplement that, and other student needs. One $500 scholarship will be awarded.

A video interview with Meadows can be seen as part of the OutSouth Oral History Project in the Louie B. Nunn Center for Oral History in UK Libraries, in conjunction with UK LGBTQ* Resources. UKY Office of LGBTQ* Resources Scholarship

The UK Office of LGBTQ* Resources scholarships are available to currently enrolled full-time students. These awards will be made to help defray the cost of tuition, room and board, books, education abroad and other expenses related to the recipient’s academic pursuits at the university. These awards are made possible by gifts to the UK LGBTQ* Endowment Scholarship Fund. Initially created by Keisa and Amanda Fallin-Bennett — two generous alums devoted to empowering student success — this fund seeks to support Wildcats who are committed to completing a degree at the university. Multiple awards of up to $2,000 will be granted on a one-time basis.
