Discover what UK Campus Recreation has to offer
LEXINGTON, Ky. (Jan. 26, 2026) — Students: have you checked out Alumni Gym or the Johnson Center lately? Many students don’t realize just how much Campus Recreation, housed within the Office for Student Success, has to offer.
Beyond open gym access, Campus Recreation offers a range of opportunities to stay active, including group fitness classes, personal training sessions and new virtual fitness options.
Group fitness is one of the most popular offerings among students, because it’s flexible, beginner-friendly and offered at both Alumni Gym and the Johnson Center.
Here’s a look at some of the classes available:
- Cycling: Get your heart pumping during a high-energy ride with hills, flats and speed work set to music. All fitness levels are welcome.
- Yoga: Take a moment to breathe and reset. This class helps align your mind and body through guided flows and calming energy.
- Pilates: A low-impact, full-body workout focusing on core strength and controlled movement. Light weights and bands may be added for an extra challenge.
- Barre: Lengthen, strengthen and tone with ballet-inspired moves mixed with Pilates, dance and resistance training. Expect small, precise movements that deliver big results.
- Zumba: Dance your stress away. These classes blend Latin and international beats into a fun, high-energy cardio party.
- WERQ Cardio Hip-Hop: A dance-fitness workout that fuses hip-hop, pop and rock music with athletic choreography for an upbeat sweat session.
- Les Mills Sprint (new): A quick, 30-minute cycle blast combining speed, resistance and intervals to push your limits in half the time.
- Les Mills BodyPump: High reps, low weights and a whole lot of motivation. Strengthen your entire body with energetic instructors and music that keeps you moving.
- Les Mills BodyPump Heavy (new): Low reps and heavy weights to build strength through traditional weightlifting, set to motivating music.
- Les Mills CORE: A fast-paced, 30-minute class focused on building a strong, stable core through full-body, athletic movements.
- Les Mills BodyBalance (Johnson Center only): A refreshing mix of yoga, Tai Chi and Pilates that leaves you relaxed, strong and centered.
- Les Mills BodyStep : A fun, music-driven lower-body workout to keep your heart rate up, while you move to the beat.
The Johnson Center and Alumni Gym offer flexible schedules each semester with classes seven days a week. Weekday evening classes run as late as 8 p.m., with additional options on Saturday mornings and Sunday evenings. Schedules may change, and new class formats are added periodically, including Body Pump Heavy this semester.
“Our fitness team, led by Lindsay Thomayer, does a fantastic job curating our group fitness experiences to stay on the cutting edge of student interests while maintaining an atmosphere that is welcoming to all levels of fitness and skill,” said Mark Lattin, executive director for Campus Recreation.
If you’re looking for something more personalized, Campus Recreation also offers one-on-one personal training. You’ll work directly with a certified trainer who builds a plan tailored to your goals, schedule and experience level. Training begins with an intake form and assessment to establish a baseline and develop a personalized program.
This service is also available virtually. Trainers use the True Coach online platform to create a custom program with three workouts per week over a 12-week period.
Campus Recreation Virtual is a new option — making it easier than ever to stay active and engaged anytime, anywhere. Enroll through Canvas.

As the state’s flagship, land-grant institution, the University of Kentucky exists to advance the Commonwealth. We do that by preparing the next generation of leaders — placing students at the heart of everything we do — and transforming the lives of Kentuckians through education, research and creative work, service and health care. We pride ourselves on being a catalyst for breakthroughs and a force for healing, a place where ingenuity unfolds. It's all made possible by our people — visionaries, disruptors and pioneers — who make up 200 academic programs, a $476.5 million research and development enterprise and a world-class medical center, all on one campus.
