How to manage midterm stress

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Oct. 13, 2023) — Midterm week is fast approaching and now is a more important time than ever to familiarize oneself with the resources available on campus. The University of Kentucky provides an abundance of tutoring services, study rooms and more to aid students during the busy week ahead. Here are just a few of the many excellent resources made available through our university:

  • Visit The Study: The Study offers tutoring services for a variety of math and science subjects, ranging from accounting to organic chemistry. If you are struggling with understanding concepts or equations, or just need help creating a study guide, The Study provides the perfect place to receive the help of highly-proficient tutors. The service is free and no appointment is necessary. Find more information here. There are a plethora of other tutoring services, such as Presentation U and the Media Depot, which can be found here.
  • Meditate and workout: Dedicating plenty of time to studying serves a crucial role in ensuring success for midterms, but taking quality breaks to recover holds an important role as well. Time away from studies prevents studies from becoming burnt out, exhausted and overwhelmed. Working out at the gym offers an outlet for students to channel their anxiety productively. Students will leave their workouts feeling refreshed and reinvigorated for their midterm preparations. Students can visit Campus Recreation Centers. If students are looking for an exercise more laid-back, Headspace offers guided meditations for free to all eligible students.
  • Reserve a study room: Struggling to find a quiet place to study? Interested in meeting with a study group to prepare for exams? The William T. Young Library and Fine Arts Library offer the perfect spaces to study alone or with classmates. You can reserve a study space here. If you are interested in the hours of each library on campus, visit this link to see a full schedule.
  • Create a schedule: Midterm preparation can feel, and often become, quite chaotic. Schedules give students the ability to organize their schedules and accomplish their goals in an orderly fashion. Students can print a time management schedule provided by UK to organize their week into hour blocks dedicated to classes, studying, taking breaks and other obligations. It also has a “schedule your joy” section to ensure that students devote time to caring for themselves and recovering.

As the state’s flagship, land-grant institution, the University of Kentucky exists to advance the Commonwealth. We do that by preparing the next generation of leaders — placing students at the heart of everything we do — and transforming the lives of Kentuckians through education, research and creative work, service and health care. We pride ourselves on being a catalyst for breakthroughs and a force for healing, a place where ingenuity unfolds. It's all made possible by our people — visionaries, disruptors and pioneers — who make up 200 academic programs, a $476.5 million research and development enterprise and a world-class medical center, all on one campus.

In 2022, UK was ranked by Forbes as one of the “Best Employers for New Grads” and named a “Diversity Champion” by INSIGHT into Diversity, a testament to our commitment to advance Kentucky and create a community of belonging for everyone. While our mission looks different in many ways than it did in 1865, the vision of service to our Commonwealth and the world remains the same. We are the University for Kentucky.
