LEXINGTON, Ky. (Aug. 22, 2024) — In recognition of International Overdose Awareness Day, the Kentucky Injury Prevention and Research Center (KIPRC), which is part of the University of Kentucky College of Public Health (CPH), is hosting an event to raise awareness and provide essential resources to combat the ongoing drug overdose crisis. The event will take place noon-2 p.m., Aug. 28 in CPH room 207. The event is open to university community members, including CPH students, staff and faculty, health care professionals and anyone interested in overdose prevention.

“We’re excited to bring together the community and experts in the field to share vital information and resources that can save lives,” said Terry Bunn, director of KIPRC. “This event is an important step in KIPRC’s ongoing commitment to addressing the overdose epidemic and supporting those affected by substance use disorders.”

The event will feature several interactive tables on a variety of topics, allowing attendees to explore and gather information on critical overdose prevention resources and initiatives:

Administering Naloxone: Attendees will learn about the lifesaving benefits of naloxone, an opioid overdose reversal medication. The event will feature demonstrations on how to administer naloxone, equipping participants for an overdose emergency.

Drug Overdose Trends: Experts will provide an overview of current drug overdose trends in Kentucky and across the nation and will discuss some of the factors contributing to the rise in overdose deaths and the populations most at risk.

KIPRC’s Locator Tool: Learn about KIPRC’s innovative locator tool, FindHelpNowKY.org, which helps individuals find substance use disorder treatment, recovery housing, and mental health services with available openings. It’s a vital resource for those seeking immediate help and long-term recovery solutions.

Community Resources and Overdose Prevention Initiatives: Local community resources and overdose prevention initiatives aimed at reducing the impact of the opioid crisis will also be highlighted.

Research Opportunities: Talk with KIPRC staff about research opportunities related to substance use prevention and treatment.

This event is a unique opportunity for the community to come together to learn about available resources and explore how to support those affected by substance use disorders.

KIPRC is a unique partnership between the Kentucky Department for Public Health (DPH) and the University of Kentucky’s College of Public Health. KIPRC serves both as an academic injury prevention research center and as the DPH’s designee or “bona fide agent” for statewide injury prevention and control.

As the state’s flagship, land-grant institution, the University of Kentucky exists to advance the Commonwealth. We do that by preparing the next generation of leaders — placing students at the heart of everything we do — and transforming the lives of Kentuckians through education, research and creative work, service and health care. We pride ourselves on being a catalyst for breakthroughs and a force for healing, a place where ingenuity unfolds. It's all made possible by our people — visionaries, disruptors and pioneers — who make up 200 academic programs, a $476.5 million research and development enterprise and a world-class medical center, all on one campus.

In 2022, UK was ranked by Forbes as one of the “Best Employers for New Grads” and named a “Diversity Champion” by INSIGHT into Diversity, a testament to our commitment to advance Kentucky and create a community of belonging for everyone. While our mission looks different in many ways than it did in 1865, the vision of service to our Commonwealth and the world remains the same. We are the University for Kentucky.
