Learn About Education Abroad at Fall Fair Sept. 14

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Sept. 7, 2017) — University of Kentucky Education Abroad and Exchanges (UK EA) will host its Fall Fair at 3-7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 14, in the Hub at the William T. Young Library.

The annual event is open to all UK students and faculty interested in learning more about education abroad opportunities available at the university. This year, the Fall Fair will be bigger than ever because the event is part of the UK 101 curriculum.

“It’s important for students to begin planning their education abroad experience as early as possible to ensure that their program aligns with their four-year degree plan, said Miko McFarland, executive director of Education Abroad and Exchanges. “We are excited to partner with UK 101 to introduce first-year students to the experiences that will support their academic, professional and personal growth within a broader international context.”

At the fair, students will be able to explore the multitude of program options, such as study, intern, research, service and teach abroad programs, plus domestic and international exchanges. Faculty, advisors and program representatives will be available to speak about the global opportunities for different majors. In addition, representatives from other campus resources, such as the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships, James W. Stuckert Career Center and Wildcat Passport Acceptance Facility, will be present at the fair to share their services that can assist students in the education abroad process.

The fair will also introduce UK EA's new UK Core Abroad programs, a selection of programs that allow students to fulfill UK Core requirements abroad. Students are encouraged to visit the UK Core Abroad table at the fair to find out which programs offer pre-approved UK Core classes.

"Our goal for the UK EA Core Abroad Program, is to provide students, especially freshmen, with the opportunity to take one to two of their UK Core courses abroad during the summer," said Niamh Minion, assistant director of Education Abroad and Exchanges.

"This program was designed by UK to broaden a student’s understanding of themselves, the world we live in and of their role in our global society.  Having the opportunity to take a number of UK Core courses abroad supports this endeavor and enhances the student's college experience by learning in the larger global context," Minion added.

During the fair, attendees are encouraged to visit the following fair sponsors:

Knowledge Exchange Institute (KEI): Automatic $1,000 scholarship awarded to UK students on semester and academic year KEI programs.

SOL Education Abroad (SOL): SOL offers $250-$750 awards for programs in Latin America.

The Education Abroad Network (TEAN): $1,000 scholarships available to UK students on semester TEAN programs.

The Cooperative Center for Study Abroad (CCSA): CCSA awards one $1,000 semester or summer Storyteller scholarship.
