Irish Researcher Discusses Substance Abuse during First Stephen W. Wyatt Lecture

LEXINGTON, Ky. (April 15, 2015) — Substance abuse researcher and physician Joseph Barry, professor and chair of Popluation Health Medicine at Trinity College Dublin, will deliver the inaugural Stephen W. Wyatt Lecture on Public Health on Thursday, April 16.

The lecture, “Substance Use: Public Health Challenges in 21st Century Ireland,” will begin at 11 a.m. in the Alumni Gallery of the W.T. Young Library. Lunch will be provided. Barry will address substance use and abuse in Ireland and its public health implications on a global scale.

In addition to his teaching responsibilities at Trinity College, Barry is involved in the training of doctors in public health medicine. His research is focused on substance use and addiction, ranging from illicit drugs to prescribed medications and alcohol.  He is heavily involved in the administration of Trinity College as well, acting as School Director of Policy and Engagement and Interim Director of the Trinity Institute of Population Health. 

The Stephen W. Wyatt Lecture, named for the first Dean of the College of Public Health at UK, seeks to address emerging health issues through an annual guest lecture on campus.  The 2015 event is the first in this series and is presented as part of the college’s Distinguished Lecture Series.
