White House Calligrapher to Speak at UK

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Oct. 17, 2011) − If you’re planning to receive a head of state, member of royalty, or even an ambassador, you’ll want to learn everything you can about the proper protocol. This includes correct invitations, beautifully lettered menus and handsome place cards prepared for presidents, kings and diplomats.

Rick Paulus, former chief calligrapher of the White House and protocol officer for the U.S. Department of State, is an expert on these dos and don'ts and will give a presentation on the role the beautifully designed, hand-created graphics played at America’s Executive Mansion. The free public talk, "From the White House to the Sea," is scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 21st, at the Great Hall, Special Collections Library, at the Margaret I. King Building on the University of Kentucky campus.      

Paulus, now retired to Cape Cod and his privately run Cape Lettering Arts, will also conduct a calligraphy workshop at King Library Press beginning 9 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 22. The Paulus talk and workshop are presented by the King Library Press (KLP) at UK Libraries. The press is devoted to the tradition of fine printing and produces books and broadsides. Recent publications available from KLP include a portfolio of five poems by Kentucky Poet Laureate Jane Gentry Vance, Necia Harkless's "Heart to Heart" and Abraham Lincoln's "Second Inaugural Address."
