LEXINGTON, Ky. (May 20, 2025) — High school students around Lexington have the opportunity to explore the world of statistical programming to apply it to real-life public health scenarios through the summer programming workshop.

Biostat PRODIGY is a five-day immersive statistical programming workshop that will take place this summer at Tates Creek High School. Students will be able to learn programming using R, a programming language, and have the opportunity to connect with public health professionals.

The workshop runs daily June 9-13 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Lunch will be provided as well as transportation to Fayette County Public School students who indicate they will need it. Apply online for the Biostat PRODIGY workshop.

Students can expect to gain valuable coding skills and explore exciting career paths in the industry. After the culmination of the summer workshop, students can develop their Shiny app for data visualization.

Questions about this immersive program can be directed to Kristen McQuerry, Ph.D., kristen.mcquerry@uky.edu, associate professor in the Department of Biostatistics in the University of Kentucky College of Public Health.

As the state’s flagship, land-grant institution, the University of Kentucky exists to advance the Commonwealth. We do that by preparing the next generation of leaders — placing students at the heart of everything we do — and transforming the lives of Kentuckians through education, research and creative work, service and health care. We pride ourselves on being a catalyst for breakthroughs and a force for healing, a place where ingenuity unfolds. It's all made possible by our people — visionaries, disruptors and pioneers — who make up 200 academic programs, a $476.5 million research and development enterprise and a world-class medical center, all on one campus.
