UK Commemorates National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Nov. 19, 2014) — The University of Kentucky has been commemorating National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week (NHHAW) along with many other organizations and colleges across the country. Events will be held all week in locations throughout campus. This week is sponsored by the Center for Community Outreach.

Wednesday, Nov. 19

OXFAM Social Issues Banquet

Come join the Center for Community Outreach and OXFAM for a simulation of world hunger. There will be a panel of speakers to discuss the issue of hunger on a domestic and international level. Also, there will be a mini-volunteer fair after the panel! There will be free food provided at the event! The event will take place in the Student Center Small Ballroom from 6-8 p.m.

Thursday, Nov. 20

Mayor Proclamation, and Volunteering

Mayor Gray will present a Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week proclamation to representatives of the NHHAW planning committee at the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Council meeting. The event will also be live streamed on GTV3 at 6 p.m. The event will take place from 6-8 p.m.

Hunger and Homelessness Day of Service

Come out and join the Center for Community Outreach and serve in the Lexington community at Salvation Army, God's pantry, Hope Center and Community Inn. Please meet in 106 Student Center 15 minutes prior to the start of your service event. Friday, Nov. 21

Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Day

Join the Center for Community Outreach and spread awareness on hunger and homelessness. Wear purple to promote awareness of the social issue. Purple ribbons will be handed out around campus and donations will be accepted.

Helping Hands Thanksgiving Food Baskets

Please bring donations for Thanksgiving food baskets to the Center for Community Outreach. The donations are due by 5 p.m. Friday, Nov. 21, at 106 Student Center. Please contact JoAnna Scott for more information about the baskets. 

Other events earlier in the week included an overnight homeless simulation; documentary showing; StreetVoice Council panel discussion of homelessness; and a Wrap Up America blanket making event.
