UK to Host Careers in Science and Engineering Symposium This Saturday
LEXINGTON, Ky. (Aug. 25, 2020) — This weekend, the University of Kentucky will host the 2020 Careers in Science and Engineering Symposium (CaSES). The virtual event will be held online from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 29.
This one-day event will feature career paths ranging from academia, industry and government to startups and nonprofits. The symposium is open to all students considering or pursuing a degree in science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM), as well as graduates who hold STEM degrees.
“Given the challenging nature of today’s job market, it is more important than ever for individuals pursuing or holding degrees in STEM to gain exposure to the widest possible range of career paths, some of which they may not have considered,” said Eduardo Santillan-Jimenez, event organizer and program manager at UK’s Center for Applied Energy Research. “In addition to letting attendees hear from (and interact with) scientists and engineers with various job descriptions, CaSES will also provide attendees with the tools and skills they need to choose and navigate their career path.”
The event was first held in 2017 as the “Preparing Science Professionals Symposium” organized by Nathan Vanderford and Terry Keys of the UK Markey Cancer Center. Based on the success of that event, the symposium is being brought back this year with the support of several units on campus, including those involved in UK’s National Science Foundation Graduate Research Traineeship (NRT). Other UK units supporting this event include:
- UK Center for Graduate and Professional Diversity Initiatives;
- UK Office for Institutional Diversity;
- UK Minorities in Agriculture, Natural Resources & Related Sciences;
- UK Graduate School; and
- UK Office of Community Engagement.
