LEXINGTON, Ky. (Dec. 5, 2016) The public is invited to the Southland Design Exhibit, an exhibition of student design concepts from University of Kentucky for the Southland Drive corridor developed for the "Retrofitting the RETRO" project, 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 7, at the Good Foods Co-op, located at 455 Southland Dr.

Lexington's Division of Planning called for design submittals from university students as a catalyst for a design/build pop-up project made possible by a grant from the Blue Grass Community Foundation and the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation Donor Advised Fund. These submittals will be on display for community members to view.

The goal of "Retrofitting the RETRO" is to support the Southland Drive corridor by promoting walkability, connectivity and placemaking. The Division of Planning initiated a neighborhood planning and design collaboration project, "Retrofitting the RETRO," with UK's School of Interiors, Department of Landscape Architecture and Department of Historic Preservation earlier this fall. The project has had students exploring the history of and design solutions for retrofitting the suburban strip mall model. Additional student work will be on display from the semester as part of the exhibit.
