Volunteers Needed for Move-in and K Week
LEXINGTON, Ky. (Aug. 11, 2021) — The University of Kentucky shared the message below with faculty and staff Monday requesting volunteers for the following events.
The beginning of a new school year is almost here.
As students arrive, it is an important time to remember that their success is at the center of everything we do at the University of Kentucky. And that process — of pushing and supporting these new members of our campus community – begins on Day 1.
You can play a central role in that effort by volunteering now for a number of activities next month that kick off our fall semester. Those include events such as:
- Big Blue Move-In, UK's residence hall move-in;
- K Week, the university's welcome and orientation week for all undergraduates. Volunteers can assist with Wildcat Welcome, Super Start and first day of school photos.
Here are the details of all the ways you can help:
BIG BLUE MOVE-IN
- Volunteers are needed to give students and families a warm welcome by helping unload their belongings and directing them through the move-in experience.
- Any individual or group interested in being part of this opportunity to make a great first impression for students and their families can find a list of volunteer opportunities and the volunteer sign-up form here.
- The majority of this year’s move-in is scheduled from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday, August 16th, Tuesday, August 17th and Wednesday, August 18th.
- During those times, about 2,000 students will move into residence halls each day.
- On Monday, participants in Living Learning Programs (LLPs), the Honors College and Wildcats First (First-Generation Student Cohort) move in.
- On Tuesday and Wednesday, the remaining new students, first-time Freshmen and transfer students move in.
- UK will return to the move-in protocols utilized prior to COVID-19, with one exception: all individuals will be required to wear masks when they are navigating indoor common spaces such as hallways, lobbies and elevators.

SUPER START
Super Start provides us with the opportunity to welcome students, answer their questions and provide directions to classes and other campus locations.
- Super Start will take place during the first two days of classes, August 23 and 24. There will be three information tables located (1) in the Gatton Student Center; (2) outside White Hall Classroom Building; and (3) on the Rose Street walkway to William T. Young Library.
- The tables will be in operation from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day.
- Volunteers are needed to staff these information tables and provide directions to students.
- Sign up by entering your name and selecting the time(s) you could work. Then click “Save.” After two people fill a given slot, it will be closed and unavailable. Please email KWeek@lsv.uky.edu if you have any difficulty.
FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL PHOTOS
- On Monday, August 23 from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m., the UK Parent and Family Association will be taking first-day-of-school photos for students near W.T. Young Library. Volunteers are needed to assist their staff with greeting students and managing the line. A separate sign-up link for this fun annual tradition can be found below.
