Program Discusses Tough Topics for Teens
LEXINGTON, Ky. (May 18, 2010) − From Monday through Friday, May 17-21, Kentucky Children's Hospital experts and patients will be featured in segments about Tough Topics for Teens on WTVQ-TV, ABC 36 news. The special reports will air at 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. On Friday, May 21, parents and teens will be able to talk to experts about pressing issues facing young people in Kentucky.
The features scheduled are: Monday, eating disorders; Tuesday, addiction/drug abuse; Wednesday, depression/suicide; and Thursday, sex/teen pregnancy.
"Teens are dealing with many complex issues that constitute the leading causes of illness and death such as accidents, suicide, homicide, eating disorders, teen pregnancy, drug abuse, etc.," said Dr. Hatim Omar, professor of pediatrics and obstetrics/gynecology, UK College of Medicine, and chief of adolescent at Kentucky Children's Hospital. "Parents, teachers, health care providers and society as a whole can help with more awareness and education on teen development."
Adolescent Medicine experts participating in the phone bank include: Omar; Dr. Amit Deokar; Dr. Marlene Huff, psychologist; Dr. Cari Parcells; Elizabeth Johnson, social worker; and Starr Gantz, nutritionist.
