'Frankfort Ladies' Rally for the Cure Tournament Raises $30,000 for Markey

of

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Aug. 23, 2011) − The Frankfort Country Club's Ladies Golf Association raised $30,000 to support local breast cancer research, through its eighth annual "Rally For a Cure" golf tournament.

On Monday, representatives from the association visited Lexington to present a $30,000 check to the University of Kentucky Markey Cancer Center, the tournament's designated local beneficiary. Dr. Mark Evers, director of the Markey Cancer Center, accepted the check on behalf of Markey's Comprehensive Breast Care Center.

"We are extremely grateful for this gift," Evers said. "We have some major breast cancer research going on at Markey, and every donation helps us move further towards a cure. It's an honor to have this support from the 'Frankfort Ladies.'"

Following the reception, Markey researcher Dr. Peter Zhou gave a short presentation about his current breast cancer research. Zhou's group is working on developing new potential therapeutic agents for targeting breast cancer metastasis, which accounts for 90 percent of breast cancer-related deaths.

"I'm just really excited about the research he's doing," said Monika Clark, a 22-year breast cancer survivor and chairwoman of the committee that organizes the Rally for the Cure tournament every year. "I hope Dr. Zhou's presentation will inspire us to raise even more money for breast cancer research next year."
