LEXINGTON, KY. (Feb 24, 2024) — At the second annual Teddy Bear Hospital, hosted by Kentucky Children’s Hospital (KCH) and The Living Arts & Science Center (LASC), kids will once again call the shots.

The Teddy Bear Hospital provides a mock hospital environment, allowing children to “treat” their favorite toy. This event is a fun way for children to understand what happens in hospitals and doctor’s offices, and to ease fears and uncertainty associated with medical treatment.

The event is 10 a.m.-2 p.m. March 8 at LASC, 362 N. Martin Luther King Blvd. in Lexington. Although the Teddy Bear Hospital is intended for children ages 3-11, it’s open to all ages. Don’t forget your stuffed animal!

“Play is a powerful tool for children, helping them make sense of new and sometimes overwhelming experiences,” said Jennifer Guilliams, director of the Child and Family Life Program at KCH. “By using familiar toys, we can help them understand what happens at the hospital. While no parent wants to imagine their child in the hospital, research shows that kids cope better when they are prepared for what to expect.”

Some of the treatment areas include an operating room, radiology, lab and more. KCH medical team members will be on standby, ready to assist and to teach children about hospital settings, procedures and routine exams.

Presented with the generous support of the University of Kentucky Federal Credit Union and Walmart, kids ages 3-11 will have the chance to don medical garb and bring their favorite toys for a comprehensive checkup.

“The Living Arts & Science Center provides a unique and welcoming space for families to experience art and science in an engaging way,” said Jeanette Tesmer, LASC executive director. “Last year’s event was a huge success, so we’re thrilled to partner with KCH again to provide kids and their families this opportunity to learn and have fun.”

Since 1968, LASC has provided hands-on and interactive instruction in arts and science directly from professional educators, active artists and scientists. Like many of LASC’s events, the Teddy Bear Hospital is free and open to the public.

Children with sensory needs are encouraged to come and partake in a quieter, calmer environment for their toys 8:30-9:30 a.m. March 8. Five families will be admitted every 10 minutes to ensure proper spacing and time for each activity. Registration for sensory hour is here.
