LEXINGTON, Ky. (Feb. 16, 2026) — Members of the UK HealthCare Trauma Program are hosting a free educational event, Stop the Bleed, 10 a.m.- 2p.m. Saturday, Feb. 28. The goal of Stop the Bleed is to better prepare the public to save lives by raising awareness of basic actions to stop life-threatening bleeding following everyday emergencies and human-made and natural disasters.

Severe bleeding can result in death within minutes before paramedics have a chance to respond. Uncontrolled bleeding is the leading cause of preventable death from trauma. In some cases, the difference between life and death for a victim of an incident is the bravery of a bystander. Research suggests bystanders with little or no scientific training can save lives during an emergency. Just like responding to a cardiac arrest with CPR or an automatic defibrillator (AED), compressing a wound after a traumatic injury improves the chances of survival for trauma victims.

The event is at the Bluegrass Sportsman’s League, 2500 Handy’s Bend Road in Wilmore, Kentucky. Participants will be taught by members of the trauma team through hands-on simulations. Community members can register for this course at StoptheBleed.org or email amy.lambert@uky.edu. Registration is free and all are welcome to sign up.
