LEXINGTON, Ky. (June 10, 2025) — Kentucky Children’s Hospital, Safe Kids Fayette County, and local community partners are teaming up once again for Safe Kids Day, a fun and educational event focused on preventing childhood injuries. This free event is open to the public and will take place 4-7 p.m. Wednesday, June 18, at Green Acres Park, located at 1560 La Salle Road in Lexington.

“The time between June 1 and Aug. 31 is known as the ‘100 deadliest days of summer,’” said Sherri Hannan, coordinator of Safe Kids Fayette County. “This is when we see a rise in accidents involving kids, especially during outdoor activities like swimming, biking and walking. Our goal is to raise awareness and help families take simple steps to stay safe all summer long.”

Families who attend can take part in hands-on safety activities and demonstrations, including:

  • Free car seat checks and installation help
  • Fire safety tips and what to do in an emergency
  • Water safety guidelines for pools and lakes
  • Helmet fittings and a bike safety rodeo
  • How to get a child ID card in case of emergencies

There will also be plenty of fun for children, including snacks, face painting and balloon animals.

“We love getting out into the community to share important safety tips in a fun, relaxed setting,” Hannan said. “We want kids to run, bike, swim and play — but we also want parents and caregivers to know how to keep them safe while they do it.”

Preventable injuries are the leading cause of death for children and adolescents in the United States; in 2022, more than 9,000 families lost a child because of a preventable injury. Millions of children are treated in hospitals for injuries. For more tips to keep your family safe this summer, check out these resources from Safe Kids Worldwide:
