UK Doctor Attends Daughter's Graduation Via Videoconference

LEXINGTON, Ky. (June 1, 2010)Dr. Richard C. Haydon III, professor of surgery, University of Kentucky College of Medicine, and an otolaryngologist for UK HealthCare, will see his daughter's graduation in Greenville, S.C., live through videoconference technology.

Haydon isn't able to attend the graduation of his daughter, Caroline Haydon, a student at the South Carolina Governor's School for the Arts and Humanities, due to a medical condition. Thanks to Dianna Vice-Pasch, clinical coordinator, and Frank Farmer, senior telemedicine associate of Kentucky TeleCare, Haydon will be connected live to the auditorium. Farmer said he contacted the school and they will have a laptop and camcorder there while Haydon watches and hears everything here at Kentucky TeleCare.

”Kentucky TeleCare is normally focused on using our videoconference technology to connect doctors and patients from far away but part of our service mission is to help our faculty, staff and patients and this is one way to use our technology to bring people together," said Rob Sprang, director, Kentucky TeleCare, and co-project manager, Kentucky TeleHealth Network.

“Words can not begin to describe how grateful I am to the University of Kentucky and to the South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities for providing me this opportunity during this once-in-a-lifetime event in my daughter’s and my life," said Haydon. "It is nice to know that people care so much. This act of benevolence will forever be cherished and remembered.”
