UK HealthCare celebrates Lunar New Year with events, special menu

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Jan. 27, 2025) — As the Lunar New Year draws near, UK HealthCare’s Office of Health Disparities, Arts in HealthCare and the UK International Center invite the community to join in celebration.

The event is noon-1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 29 at Chandler Hospital’s Pavilion A ground floor lobby.

The Lunar New Year is a significant cultural celebration that marks the arrival of spring and the beginning of a new lunar calendar year. Millions of people worldwide celebrate, and it is a time for family reunions, honoring ancestors and wishing for good health and fortune in the year ahead.

The Office of Health Disparities has worked with Chandler Dining to create an Asian-inspired menu for the celebration. From Jan. 27-31, this special menu will be served at the main Pavilion A cafeteria.

This menu will feature dishes of Korean fried chicken with vegetable fried rice, Szechuan-style green beans, Vietnamese shrimp and noodle salad. A soup station will also serve chicken pho.

In addition to the meal, the event will feature traditional music, dance and activities to honor the Lunar New Year. Performances by Shuling Studio and local artists will include:

  • Noon: Folk dance
  • 12:04 p.m.: Magnificent Silk Road – ribbon dance
  • 12:07 p.m.: The Elephant – Yangquin (dulcimer)
  • 12:11 p.m.: Chinese Tai Chi dance
  • 12:14 p.m.: Fighting Typhoon
  • 12:18 p.m.: Peacocks Flying Over dance
  • 12:22 p.m.: Joyful XinJiang (dulcimer)
  • 12:26 p.m.: Chrysanthemums (Guzheng)
  • 12:30 p.m.: The Beauty – fan dance
  • 12:30 p.m.: Activities – calligraphy and paper cutting

Whether familiar with the traditions or new to the celebration, this event is free and open to the public. This event will be an exciting opportunity to experience the celebration of Lunar New Year customs and share the spirit of joy, renewal and hope for the year ahead.
