College of Arts and Sciences' Podcast Features 'Homegrown Kentucky'

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Oct. 22, 2012) — The College of Arts and Sciences produces podcasts that demonstrate work being done by the faculty and students in the college. Each week, UKNow will highlight a podcast. This week focuses on Homegrown Kentucky.

Homegrown Kentucky is a farm-to-school project developed by University of Kentucky students Ben Smith, Adam Meredith, Luke McAnally, Patrick Johnson and Ben Norton. The first site for the project is Owsley County.

The students, working with the Owsley County Board of Education and Eastern Kentucky non-profit organizations, established a small-scale farm that provides all of the produce for the school district's cafeterias.

Ideally, the same model will be applied to other schools across Kentucky, making Kentucky schools more self-sufficient while offering students and community members an opportunity to learn and practice agricultural skills.

This podcast chronicles a visit to Owsley County High School for a board meeting and tour of the farm, which consists of a few acres adjacent to the school. Agricultural Science teacher Dustin Estridge and some of his students share their experiences with the project.
