Undergraduates Sought for Commencement Speaker

LEXINGTON, Ky. (March 8, 2012) – One of the most gratifying components of Commencement is hearing from your fellow graduates. This year at the University of Kentucky, two esteemed students will have the opportunity to address their peers at their respective Commencement ceremonies. UK is currently accepting applications for student speakers at the 145th Commencement Ceremonies. Applications are available online at www.uky.edu/commencement.

This year, two qualified undergraduate student speakers will be chosen by the Commencement Speaker Selection Committee to address their fellow graduates. One undergraduate student will speak at the 1 p.m. ceremony and one undergraduate student will speak at the 6 p.m. ceremony.

Undergraduate students eligible to speak at the 1 p.m. Commencement Ceremony are students from the colleges of Agriculture, Business and Economics, Education, Engineering and Nursing. Undergraduate students eligible to speak at the 6 p.m. Commencement Ceremony are students from the colleges of Arts and Sciences, Communications and Information Studies, Design, Fine Arts, Health Sciences and Social Work.

In order to be considered for this honor, applicants must be receiving an undergraduate degree from the University of Kentucky at the May 6 Commencement Ceremony. The applicant must have contributed to UK through campus or community activities and through his or her field of study. Applicants must also demonstrate superior public speaking skills.

Undergraduate students who wish to apply must submit a resume, information sheet and a copy of their proposed speech no longer than three typed, double-spaced pages. Incomplete applications will not be considered by the selection committee.
