of

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Aug. 31, 2009) − The University of Kentucky Fine Arts Institute returns again this fall with noncredit art classes for the community. In addition to the program's successful classes in areas like ceramics, woodworking and jewelry making, the institute will also present such new classes as metal working and digital photography. The institute will host a separate painting workshop with national artist Elizabeth Pruitt for individuals looking for a more condensed format.

The UK Fine Arts Institute's nine courses and their corresponding instructors are:

- ceramics with alumna Jill Stofer, professional clay artist and owner of Main Cross Gallery;

- beginning metal working with Jeremy Colbert, the sculpture and ceramics technician at UK Department of Art;

- woodworking with Lynn Sweet, head of the UK woodworking program;

- digital photography with alumna Sarah Wylie Ammerman, a filmmaker, freelance designer and educator;

- watercolor painting with professional artist and educator Helena Pappas;

- beginning drawing and painting with alumna Christine Kuhn, a professional artist and educator;

- mixed media drawing and collage also with Kuhn; and

- guerilla jewelry 101 and guerilla jewelry 102, with alumnus Dwayne Cobb, a regional jewelry artist.

In the years since the Fine Arts Institute was founded in 1993 by the UK Department of Art, the program has educated adults in the arts. Hundreds have benefitted from courses like the ones offered this fall.

Most classes presented by the UK Fine Arts Institute will be held in UK Department of Art facilities, including the Reynolds Buildings on South Broadway, the Fine Arts Building on Rose Street, and the Lucille C. Little Fine Arts Library. The guerilla jewelry courses will not meet on campus, and instead will be presented at the artist's studios at Dancin' Dog Designs, located at 100B Main St. in Midway, Ky.

The fall 2009 classes for the UK Fine Arts Institute begin Sept. 14 and continue through Nov. 14. Classes meet two to three hours once a week in the evening or on Saturday mornings. Fees vary according to the class. To register for a course this session contact the institute by the beginning of the session, Sept. 14.

In conjunction with the institute's fall session of classes, the program will also present an intermediate painting workshop titled "Painting Workshop: Still-Life Painting with Elizabeth Pruitt." This three-day workshop will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 18-20, at the Reynolds Building. To register for this workshop, contact the Fine Arts Institute by Friday, Sept. 4.

Pruitt, whose work can be found in private collections throughout the nation, is represented by several galleries, including Mountain Trails Gallery, in Park City, Utah, and Palm Desert, Calif.; Journeys West Gallery, in Solana Beach, Calif.; Legacy Gallery, in Jackson Hole, Wy., and Scottsdale, Ariz.; Tierney Fine Art, in Bozeman, Mont.; Highlands Art Gallery, in Chester, N.J.; and Manchester Vermont Fine Art Gallery, in Manchester, Vt.
