LEXINGTON, Ky. (Jan. 24, 2019) — What is the outlook for Kentucky’s economy in 2019? Should investors be confident about how the stock market will perform this year or concerned? What will the impacts of ongoing political partisanship in Washington, D.C. be on "Main Street USA?"

Questions like these and many more will be addressed by a panel of experts on Wednesday, Feb. 13, as the University of Kentucky hosts the 30th annual Economic Outlook Conference, sponsored by Central Bank, in downtown Lexington.

The event is hosted by UK’s Gatton College of Business and Economics’ Don and Cathy Jacobs Executive Education Center, along with the Center for Business and Economic Research (CBER). Commerce Lexington and The Lane Report are serving as presenting sponsors, and the Lexington-Bluegrass Association of Realtors (lbar.com), is a partner sponsor.

The Lexington Convention Center Bluegrass Ballroom 2 is the event site with check in and continental breakfast from 8 to 8:30 a.m., and the conference itself from 8:30 to noon.

Expert speakers and presenters include:

  • Loretta J. Mester, president and CEO, Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland, Ohio, “A View from the Federal Reserve”;
  • Jenny Minier, Sturgill Professor of Business and Public Policy, director of CBER and professor of economics, Gatton College, “Economic Outlook for 2019: Kentucky and Beyond”;
  • William Hoyt, chair and Gatton Professor of Economics, Gatton College, “Considering Revisions to Kentucky’s Tax Structure in Light of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act”; and
  • David O’Neill, property valuation administrator, Fayette County, Kentucky, “Fayette County Property Market Trends.”

"We expect this annual event to again provide business leaders and other interested citizens with great information and insights on a range of issues impacting our economy,” said Simon Sheather, dean of the Gatton College. “The presentations will be compelling and very timely.”

Minier, who succeeded Chris Bollinger, Sturgill Endowed Professor of Economics in the Gatton College, as director of CBER last July, added, “We are proud that CBER is producing the Kentucky Annual Economic Report for the 36th consecutive year in 2019, and that this marks the 30th anniversary of this important conference. We are especially looking forward to hearing from Dr. Loretta Mester, president of the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland and currently a member of the committee that sets monetary policy.”

Audience participation will be an important part of the event in the form of a speaker panel Q&A following the presentations.

Early registration is recommended for the 30th annual Economic Outlook Conference and can be done online. The registration fee of $120 includes continental breakfast and all materials. For groups of five or more, a discounted registration fee of $105 per person is offered.
