UK to Dedicate Science Library

of

LEXINGTON, KY. (Oct. 6, 2009) - The public is invited to attend an information showcase and dedication ceremony for the new Science Library at the University of Kentucky beginning at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 7. The ceremony for the UK Science Library, located in the M.I. King Building, will be held on the facility's third floor. Refreshments will be served after the ceremony in the Science Library lobby.

In conjunction with the dedication ceremony, the UK Science Library will also host a Science Information Showcase from 2 to 5 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 7, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 8. All events are free and open to the public.

First conceptualized in a 1994 proposal that suggested merger of all UK's physical science collections into one Science Library, the library began to become a reality once funding became available in fall of 2007. Renovation of the facility, move and physical merger was underway on the facility by 2008.

Today, UK's new Science Library includes three floors of library space and computing resources, a reference collection, a computer lab, a service desk which also provides IT assistance, a major library print collection, a large map collection, information kiosks and a lounge area with snacks and drinks for patrons. The facility is home to a collection that contains a variety of materials related to astronomy, chemistry, geological sciences, mathematics, physics, and statistics, as well as the Map Collection, international in coverage, composed of maps, aerial photos, atlases and gazetteers.

But, the Science Library is not finished growing. The facility hopes to enter phase two of renovation in the coming years and renovate the fourth and fifth floors of the M.I. King Building, as well as integrate the university's engineering collection.
