Cards and Poetry Take Cats Den by Storm

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Nov. 8, 2010) – It’s time to hone your best card skills as the Cats Den prepares for its annual ACUI Spades tournament. Today at 7 p.m., the sly game of cards, where the spade always trumps, will take place.

Last year, two University of Kentucky students placed second in the Regional ACUI Spades Tournament, and this year the Cats Den hopes to send more skilled players to the regional tournament. Do not worry, players of all experience levels are welcome, just have the rules of the game down when you walk in the door.

Do you have a rhyme that you have always wanted to showcase? Then the Cats Den invites poets of all experience levels to come out to the ACUI Poetry Slam Competition, held at 7 p.m Tuesday, Nov. 9. The winner of this competition will qualify to share their original lines at the ACUI Regional Poetry Slam. All you need is to gather a little courage at the door and you will find yourself immersed in a commune of people just as eager to bare their souls.

Prepare to laugh all night long starting at 8 p.m. on Nov. 10, as Comedy Caravan brings Joe Zimmerman to Wildcat Country. The funny man, who is known at the national level for his likeable stage demeanor and uniquely crafted material, was recently named by Creative Loafing Magazine as Charlotte’s Comedian of the Year for 2006. If that was not enough, Charlie Gerener, a producer of NBC’s Last Comic Standing, described Zimmerman as “a breath of fresh air in the world of Stand Up Comedy, who displays a likeable and natural talent that is rarely seen.”

The Cat’s Den is located on the first floor of the University of Kentucky’s Student Center. All of the events hosted by the Cat's Den are free to students, staff, and faculty.
