Gatton College Class Celebrates 'Economics of Altruism' on Dec. 5
LEXINGTON, Ky. (Dec. 4, 2017) — The community is invited to a special celebration with the students from University of Kentucky’s Gatton College of Business and Economics class, Economics 410: Economics of Altruism, Philanthropy, and Nonprofit Organizations, 3:30 p.m. tomorrow (Tuesday), Dec. 5, in Room 307, Woodward Hall, in the Gatton building.
The students will present their work with nine nonprofit organizations that are making a big difference in Lexington, and one organization chosen by the students will be awarded a $10,000 grant to support their activities.
This class, taught by Gail Hoyt, professor of economics and a Gatton faculty member for more than 20 years, has been working throughout the fall semester with these nonprofits conducting various types of analysis and preparing reports for each organization.
“We are grateful for the support of Gatton College alumnus and donor Chuck Sonsteby for funding this project in its entirety,” Hoyt said. “His support provides a unique learning opportunity for our students as economic skills learned in the classroom are applied in the local community.”
The featured organizations are:
- Arbor Youth Services;
- Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Bluegrass;
- Bluegrass Land Conservancy;
- Central Kentucky Riding for Hope;
- Central Music Academy;
- The Lexington Humane Society;
- The Nest Center for Women, Children and Families;
- Seedleaf; and
- The Well of Lexington.
