Non-credit Turkish Language Class Offered on Campus

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Oct. 25, 2011) — The Turkish Student Association (TSA) at the University of Kentucky will offer a free, noncredit, beginner-level Turkish language class starting Thursday, Oct. 27.  The class will meet each Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. in 327 White Hall Classroom Building.

"This program is TSA`s main event at UK this year to celebrate the 88th anniversary of the Turkish Republic Day, which is celebrated every year on October 29th," said Turkish Student Association member and class instructor Mehmet Saracoglu, a graduate student UK's mining engineering program. "Interest in learning the Turkish language has been increasing as Turkey emerges as an economic power with geographical and political ties to Central Asian, Middle Eastern and European nations and as Turkish becomes a key language for many academic positions in the U.S. and in Europe."

Turkish is among the top 10 spoken languages in the world and is one of 13 languages listed under the Critical Language Scholarship program of the U.S. Department of State.
