Portion of Hospital Drive to Close Temporarily

During road closures, vehicular traffic traveling to and from Hospital Drive will be detoured.

UPDATE: This closure has been delayed. The university will communicate the new closure date when it has been determined.

LEXINGTON, Ky. (April 6, 2022)  A portion of Hospital Drive located between University Drive and Veterans Drive will close temporarily starting on Monday, April 11, to continue construction work on Cooling Plant #1. The road closure is expected to last two weeks, weather permitting.

Access to the University Drive Garage (PS #1), VA Hospital patient/visitor area, delivery service and ambulance access to Chandler Hospital will be impacted. The Orange Route bus service will also be rerouted in the vicinity.

Sidewalks on the north and west sides of the plant are closed for the duration of the project and pedestrian traffic is being redirected to other adjacent routes.

Vehicular traffic traveling to and from Hospital Drive will be detoured around the construction site using Complex and Veterans drives.

Contractors are replacing the existing cooling towers at the plant; the new towers are expected to improve efficiency and reduce energy consumption. For more details about the project, see this story.

Please exercise caution and anticipate additional traffic congestion in the area and possible commuting delays.

As the state’s flagship, land-grant institution, the University of Kentucky exists to advance the Commonwealth. We do that by preparing the next generation of leaders — placing students at the heart of everything we do — and transforming the lives of Kentuckians through education, research and creative work, service and health care. We pride ourselves on being a catalyst for breakthroughs and a force for healing, a place where ingenuity unfolds. It's all made possible by our people — visionaries, disruptors and pioneers — who make up 200 academic programs, a $476.5 million research and development enterprise and a world-class medical center, all on one campus.

In 2022, UK was ranked by Forbes as one of the “Best Employers for New Grads” and named a “Diversity Champion” by INSIGHT into Diversity, a testament to our commitment to advance Kentucky and create a community of belonging for everyone. While our mission looks different in many ways than it did in 1865, the vision of service to our Commonwealth and the world remains the same. We are the University for Kentucky.
