Soledad O’Brien to Speak at UK
LEXINGTON, Ky. (Nov. 1, 2010) – This just in, Soledad O’Brien, CNN reporter and correspondent, will present a lecture for the University of Kentucky and local community at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 3, in the Singletary Center for the Arts on UK’s campus. This event is free for students and sponsored by the Student Activities Board (SAB).
O’Brien joined CNN in 2003 as the co-anchor for its flagship morning program, “American Morning.” She went on to produce documentaries for the series “In America” including "Latino in America," the Haiti earthquake, "Black in America," "Children of the Storm" and "One Crime at a Time." She covered Hurricane Katrina, the tsunami in Southeast Asia and the 2005 London terrorism attacks. She has received numerous awards for community and humanitarian efforts, journalism and being an activist for social change.

As a multiracial female journalist her hot topics include issues in relation to diversity and women in the workplace. UK is also the first stop in a tour for her new book, “The Next Big Story: My Journey Through the Land of Possibilities.”
“As a journalism student myself I really admire Ms. O’Brien and everything she has accomplished,” Jasmine Whitlow, director of the SAB Multicultural Affairs Committee, said. “Students have the opportunity to hear from a journalist who has personal experiences with international events and whose insight is really inspiring.”
O’Brien, a Harvard University alumna, is a member of the National Association of Black Journalists and the National Association of Hispanic Journalists.
Tickets are free for UK students with a valid UK Student ID and $5 for UK faculty, staff or the general public. Tickets can be picked up at the Singletary Center Box Office in advance or the day of the show.

In preparation for her visit, the Martin Luther King, Jr. Cultural Center is holding screenings of O’Brien’s documentary, “Black in America, Parts 1 and 2,” at noon Monday, Nov. 1, and Tuesday, Nov. 2, in 133 Student Center.
