Taste of Our World Kicks Off Cultural Diversity Festival

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Feb. 27, 2012) — Have you ever wished you could travel to exotic lands, sampling each region’s unique cultures and cuisines? Well, you can do just that at the University of Kentucky’s Taste of Our World without the hassle of passports, airplanes and luggage.

One of the most anticipated events of the campus calendar and now in its 23rd year, the Taste of Our World luncheon kicks off the university’s annual Cultural Diversity Festival 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 29, in the Frank Harris Grand Ballroom of the Student Center. The entire campus and the public are invited.

This year, WRFL will broadcast live from the event as diners indulge in cuisine from Africa, the Middle East, Asia, South America, Europe, North America and the Mediterranean. Look for the return of popular favorites among the dozens of dishes prepared by UK DIning Services staff from international recipes.

The popular Ten Thousand Villages sale will return to Taste of Our World this year with jewelry, home decor and gifts from around the world. Ten Thousand Villages works with thousands of artisans in more than 30 countries in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Middle East to bring handmade items to the United States. Fair trade enables artisans to earn a fair wage and the opportunity for a better quality of life. To view the kinds of items that will be on sale, visit http://www.tenthousandvillages.com/home.php.

Admittance tickets are $5 this year for all you care to sample in generous portions of global delicacies and beverages. The event is organized by the campus-wide Cultural Diversity Festival Committee, chaired by Debra Ross of Facilities Management, Karen Slaymaker of the Office of International affairs and Larry Crouch of Student Affairs. The mission of the UK Cultural Diversity Festival is to promote cultural awareness to the campus and Lexington community. The festival is devoted to highlighting the wealth of diversity represented at UK and strives to engage all students, faculty and staff, as well as the Lexington community, through fostering dialogue, encouraging new experiences and promoting unity. Throughout March dozens of events and activities are scheduled to entertain and to educate. A full calendar of these CDF events is published on www.uky.edu/DiversityFestival/, with updates added regularly.

“The Cultural Diversity Festival spotlights what makes the University of Kentucky unique,” said Crouch. “As a collaboration between many facets of campus, CDF ensures the inclusion of many, and education of all who are involved."
