Capitol Commemorates Fall Prevention Week

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Sept. 28, 2010) — Fall Prevention Awareness Week was commemorated at a special ceremony Sept. 20 in the Kentucky Capitol Rotunda. Gov. Steve Beshear officially proclaimed Sept. 20–24 to be Fall Prevention Awareness Week for older adults in Kentucky.

"Falls are the leading cause of injury deaths and traumatic brain injuries among Kentucky adults age 65 and older," said Gov. Beshear in a statement. "During Fall Prevention Awareness Week, we want to let all Kentuckians know that there several, simple preventive steps –from increasing physical activity to having pharmacists or physicians review prescription interactions—that can reduce the risk of fall-related injuries and, in turn, save lives."

Immediately after the ceremony, an exercise demonstration was conducted in front of the Capitol by members of Body Recall, a pain-free exercise program for older adults. Members of the Body Recall Fall Recovery Team gave a brief demonstration in lowering to the floor safely and rising from the floor successfully.
