"see blue." #selfie: Garrett Goolsby

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Oct. 4, 2016)  Want to get to know the people behind some of the biggest student leadership positions on campus? We did, too! That's why we've introduced "see blue." #selfie  a series on UKNow that lets student leaders from across campus tell us a little bit more about themselves and their organizations. Up this week, 2016 Homecoming Coalition Overall Coordinator Garrett Goolsby.

Garrett Goolsby is this year's overall coordinator for the University of Kentucky Homecoming Coalition. Goolsby, an integrated strategic communication junior, has the position of helping unify the university community through events, bringing forth a celebration of tradition, spirit and values during UK Homecoming! Learn more about Goolsby and how she has prepared for Homecoming 2016 in her "see blue." #selfie.

UKNow: What is your major and what year are you?

Garrett Goolsby: I’m a junior and I’m an integrated strategic communication major.

UK: Where are you from?

GG: Raleigh, North Carolina.

UK: Tell me about your position on Homecoming Coalition.

GG: I’m the overall coordinator. Last year I was promotional coordinator and I was bumped up to overall this year. I help coordinate the events and work with other organizations in the coalition to make sure Homecoming is a cohesive unit.

UK: When did you become involved with this?

GG: I became involved freshman year as a promotional coordinator. This year I stepped up as overall coordinator.

UK: What is your major goal for Homecoming Coalition this year?

GG: I want to represent the underrepresented organizations!

UK: Why do you love it so much?

GG: I love traditions and homecoming is one of the best traditions at the University of Kentucky.

UK: What else are you involved in?

GG: Alpha Chi Omega — I was a founding member. I also interned at UK Public Relations and Marketing.

UK: What are some new events to UK Homecoming this year?

GG: So, in previous years the Homecoming Coalition has only overseen events. This year we have taken over Wildcat Cup, the banner competition, Paint the Town Blue, Kitty Karnival and Royalty. So I have been overseeing all those changes.

UK: What is your favorite event during UK Homecoming?

GG: I like Kitty Karnival because it reaches out to the community and students — so it brings all of Lexington together.

UK: Were you involved in any homecoming events when you were in high school?

GG: I was involved a little bit. I went to a small, private school. My graduating class had 21 people, so my homecoming was really small. I came to Kentucky’s homecoming my junior year and I really liked it and I remembered that, and that’s why I applied as promotional coordinator.

UK: How many events will the coalition be planning this year?

GG: The Homecoming Coalition will be coordinating and overseeing seven events.

UK: Growing up what did you want to be?

GG: I always wanted to be in sales because my dad was in sales. I still kind of want to do that!

UK: If you could have a superpower, what would it be?

GG: It would be to fly.

UK: What was your first job?

GG: I was a camp counselor at New Life camp in Raleigh! That’s what I did in the summers starting at age 14.

UK: What was your favorite K Week event your freshman year?

GG: Big Blue U. I got to speak at that for Homecoming this year!

UK: If you could travel anywhere  money being no option  where would you go?

GG: I would go to Australia! I’ve already been to Europe.

UK: What made you decide to come to UK?

GG: I’ve been a UK fan my whole life. My parents are both from Kentucky and my dad came to UK. They raised me to love Kentucky basketball! Since seventh grade, I started really thinking about going to UK. I always knew that I would come here!

UK: Who would you want to play you in a movie of your life?

GG: Drew Barrymore.

UK: Favorite Instagram filter?

GG: Valencia. I always pick that one.

UK: Where is your favorite place on campus to #seeblue?

GG: Commonwealth Stadium.

UK: What would you tell an incoming freshman?

GG: Get involved as soon as you can. It’s a good way to meet friends and will set you apart from everyone else. Homecoming was my way to get involved and it has been great!
