UK Progresses Towards Success with Tatyana Ali and Amir Windom
LEXINGTON, Ky. (Feb. 10, 2016) — The University of Kentucky recognizes Black History Month with many events hosted by the Martin Luther King Center. This week, actress and singer Tatyana Ali and Grammy-award winning executive Amir Windom are the featured speakers for the "Progression Towards Success" series and will discuss control of self-image, women's empowerment, academic destiny and self-awareness. The free public event will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 10, in Memorial Hall.
Ali, best known for her role as Ashley Banks from the hit show, "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air," is also a graduate of Harvard University, where she received a bachelor's degree in African-American studies and government. Ali continues to act and work on her singing career. She is vocal about politics and has taken initiative in leading voter registration drives on college campuses.
Windom is one of the top entertainment executives and creative minds of this generation. He has helped to develop and manage the careers of top artists such as T.I., Kanye West, Trey Songz and Madonna. Windom has worked on many albums that have attained gold and platinum status. Outside of music, he has helped create marketing strategies for Kodak, Coca-Cola and Adidas. With an already extensive list of accomplishments, Windom still has more big plans that he will see through.
“I came to speak and inspire the students at UK a few years back, and I left the campus inspired by them to do more. They were so engaging, so hungry for knowledge. I told Kahlil Baker in the MLK Center I wanted to create something ongoing with their campus,” Windom said.
He added, “The ‘CONVO Series’ is a reflection of how the students inspired me to do more with UK. This event is one of many cool, impactful things I've partnered with the MLK Center on with the goal of enhancing the lives and mentalities of UK students.”
This event is being co-sponsored by the campus chapter of the National Association of Black Journalists.
