Kentucky Set to Host Two-Day Quad Meet Against Missouri, Northwestern, SIU

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Kentucky swimming and diving teams will wrap up their fall dual schedule as they host Southeastern Conference foe Missouri, Northwestern and Southern Illinois in a two-day quad dual meet Nov. 4-5 inside Lancaster Aquatic Center. Events will begin Friday at 1 p.m. as the divers kick things off, and swimming will start at 5 p.m. Events will resume Saturday at 10 a.m.

"This is a really good opportunity against some stiff competition this weekend," said head coach Lars Jorgensen. "Both the men and the women are feeling good about their performances last weekend, and this will be another great experience for them. Competing back-to-back days really prepares our athletes for the post-season which is our main focus."

Four of the squads competing in the meet are ranked in the College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) NCAA Division I Coaches’ Poll, which was released Oct. 26. Kentucky’s men are slotted at No. 18, while the women are ranked 21st. This is the first time both teams have been ranked at the same time under fourth-year head coach Jorgensen.

Missouri’s men’s and women’s squads also nabbed spots in the top 25, coming in at No. 20 and No. 17, respectively. The Tigers’ last outing came Oct. 14, when the Tigers hosted SEC opponent Alabama. Missouri’s women came out on top, posting a 167-132 victory, while the men suffered a 187-114 loss.

Northwestern’s men come into this weekend’s quad with a 4-2 record in dual meets, earning wins over Olivet Nazarene, UIC, Chicago and Eastern Michigan. However, the team is coming off back-to-back losses to No. 3 North Carolina State and No. 26 Duke. On the women’s side, Northwestern has put together a perfect 5-0 record this fall, defeating Chicago, UIC, Olivet Nazarene, Rutgers and Illinois.

Southern Illinois’ women’s swimming and diving team most recently took on Illinois and Illinois State on Oct. 22, where SIU fell to the Fighting Illini, 178-103, but topped the Redbirds, 171-110. The men’s team starts the season 2-0, having won dual meets against Evansville and McKendree.

Friday’s events will include men’s and women’s 1-meter and 3-meter springboard events, 200 free relay, 200 IM, 500 free, 100 breast, 200 back, 100 free, 200 fly and 400 medley relay. Competition will resume Saturday morning with platform dive, 200 medley relay, 1000 free, 50 free, 100 back, 200 breast, 100 fly, 200 free, 400 IM and 400 free relay.

Admission to Friday’s meet, as well as all UK home meets, are free to the public.

Fans can park in Parking Structure No. 7, located within walking distance of Lancaster Aquatic Center on the corner of Complex Drive and Sports Center Drive. 

KENTUCKY ATHLETES IN NATIONAL RANKINGS

Early in the season, Kentucky holds 26 times that currently rank in the top 25 nationally among Division I swimmers, including four times that rank in the top 10.

Senior Kyle Higgins holds the highest-ranked time for Kentucky, as he owns the No. 4 spot in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:45.37. Higgins also ranks 25th in the 100 fly with his 48.36 performance in last week’s tri meet with Indiana and Tennessee.

The men’s distance freestyle events have proven to be a strong specialty for the Wildcats, holding six top-25 times between the 500, 1000 and 1650 races. Andrew Aviotti holds the fifth fastest time in both the 1650 freestyle race with his 15:19.00 swim at South Carolina and the 1000 free after posting a 9:07.71 in last weekend’s tri meet. Jarod Kehl is also ranked in two distance events:  24th in the 500 free and 17th in the 1650.

On the women’s side, the top time comes from freshman Asia Seidt, as her 2:00.21 finish in the 200 individual medley last weekend earns her the ninth fastest time in the country. Seidt also holds the 13th-fastest time in the 100-yard backstroke.

Kathryn Painter sits just outside the top 10 in the 1650 freestyle race, as her time of 16:57.66 at South Carolina is good for 11th in the standings.

Defending NCAA Champion in the 200 backstroke, Danielle Galyer currently holds the 13th-fastest time in the event with her 1:57.52 time vs. Tennessee and Indiana. Her younger sister, Ali Galyer, follows close behind in the event, as her 1:57.66 is good for 15th.

LAST TIME OUT

The Kentucky swimming and diving teams hosted No. 1/13 (men/women) Indiana and Southeastern Conference foe No. 13/11 Tennessee in a double dual last Friday. The men recorded their second SEC dual win of the season, tallying a 167-143 victory over the Volunteers, while the women fell to Tennessee in a 155-145 decision. Both squads fell to the Hoosiers, as the men were defeated 195-105, and the women 169-131.
