US flag retirement kiosk unveiled at UK Center of Excellence in Rural Health
HAZARD, Ky. (July 5, 2024) — Staff at the University of Kentucky Center of Excellence in Rural Health (UK CERH) have organized a new option to help the local community respectfully retire worn U.S. flags.
“This Fourth of July, many of us will be displaying American flags in celebration of our nation’s independence. At this time of year, with flags so beautifully and prominently displayed, it is a good time to remember that when an American flag becomes worn out or torn, the U.S. Flag Code provides guidance on how to appropriately retire it,” said Fran Feltner, D.N.P., director of the UK CERH.
“We have proudly installed a secure flag retirement drop-box at the UK CERH,” said Josh Adams, a veteran of the U.S. Navy, and a rural outreach coordinator at UK CERH who spearheaded the idea to have a flag retirement kiosk location at the UK CERH, located at 750 Morton Blvd. in Hazard, Kentucky. “This service is important to us and is a symbol of our commitment to honoring the flag and serving our community,” Adams added.
“Through a partnership with Boy Scout Troop 147 in Floyd County, we can ensure that worn flags are ceremonially retired with tradition and respect and in accordance to the U.S. Flag Code,” said Adams.
