Noted musicologist deconstructs Pink Floyd’s ‘Dark Side of the Moon’ Oct. 10 at Singletary

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Oct. 7, 2024)  —  The Singletary Center for the Arts continues its 2024-25 season with a unique lecture event for music enthusiasts and Pink Floyd fans alike: Deconstructing “Dark Side of the Moon” with renowned musicologist Scott Freiman. Freiman delves into the intricate layers of one of rock music’s most iconic albums at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 10 in the Singletary Center Recital Hall.

Originally released in 1973, Pink Floyd’s “Dark Side of the Moon” has become one of the best-selling albums of all time, with more than 45 million copies sold worldwide. Known for its immersive soundscapes, existential themes and groundbreaking production, the album continues to inspire and captivate audiences across generations.

Freiman, a composer, musician and expert musicologist, is celebrated for his engaging and deeply insightful presentations. Through a 90-minute multimedia journey, Freiman breaks down this groundbreaking album track-by-track, offering a behind-the-scenes look at the creative process, recording techniques, and musical innovations that helped make “Dark Side of the Moon” a cultural phenomenon.

Freiman’s unique deconstructions of classic albums have earned him acclaim for making complex music history accessible and engaging to both casual listeners and seasoned musicians. This presentation promises to be both a deep dive into Pink Floyd’s masterpiece and a broader exploration of the band’s influence on the evolution of rock music.

“This show promises to be a real treat, providing great fun for classic rock fans but also an insightful look into Pink Floyd’s work from a musicological perspective,” said Singletary Center Director Matthew Gibson. “In anticipation of the Lexington Philharmonic’s Pink Floyd pops concert coming up in January 2025, the timing was perfect to bring Mr. Freiman to Lexington to share his knowledge and excitement about these rock and roll legends.”
