WUKY Voted Best Radio Station in Lexington

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Sept. 24, 2009) -- WUKY, where NPR Rocks@ 91.3, the University of Kentucky's public radio station, has earned the honor of Best Radio Station in ACE Weekly's annual Best of Lex readers' poll.  WUKY's Curtains at 8, hosted by Nick Lawrence, came in second place in the Best Local Radio Show category.

"What a tremendous honor," said WUKY General Manager Tom Godell.  "Ace’s readers are an astute bunch, and we’re delighted that they recognize and appreciate the hard work of WUKY’s outstanding news and music producers."

Each year ACE Weekly collects Best of Lex category suggestions throughout the year. A ballot is included in an August edition, and the results are announced in September. Categories range from best places to eat and shop, to best media outlets, to best local celebrities and more.

The first university-owned FM radio station in America, WUKY also is Kentucky's first public radio station. It began operating as WBKY Oct. 17, 1940, in Beattyville, Ky. In 1945, WBKY came to Lexington, and in 1989, WBKY changed its call letters to WUKY to better reflect its affiliation with the University of Kentucky.

WUKY’s award-winning local news broadcasts, anchored by Alan Lytle and Jennifer Parker, supplement daily presentations of NPR’s flagship newsmagazines, Morning Edition and All Things Considered. Midday “Adult Rock” music on WUKY is hosted by Stacy Yelton, Josh James, and Mike Graves. It’s an invigorating blend of folk, rock, Americana, blues, gospel, and much more. Other special locally-hosted WUKY shows, such as Nick Lawrence’s Curtains @ 8, focus on the arts, women’s music, and bluegrass. A complete schedule is available at www.wuky.org

WUKY is supported by its membership, listeners who regularly give their financial support to the station. It is also supported by program underwriters, the University of Kentucky, and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.
