UKPD to Help You Play it Safe at Campus Safety Fair Sept. 21
LEXINGTON, Ky. (Sept. 11, 2017) — The severity of destruction and loss of life from the 9/11 attacks 16 years ago prompted the U.S. government to strengthen the nation’s ability to withstand terrorist attacks and natural disasters. Emergency preparedness was essential in clean up and recovery efforts and is highlighted each September during National Preparedness Month.
In recognition of National Preparedness Month and Campus Safety Awareness Month, the University of Kentucky Police Department and UKPD’s Division of Crisis Management and Preparedness will participate in a Campus Safety Fair along with other university departments to engage students, staff and faculty on various issues related to overall safety and awareness.
The Campus Safety Fair will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 21 (NOTE: change of date from when story was first published due to expected rain), at the Woodland Glen/Hilltop area across from The 90. UK Police personnel will be on hand to promote the LiveSafe app and UK Alert, distribute free swag items, apply mock injury makeup and demonstrate tactics from the women’s STARR self-defense program.
UKPD Officer Logan Steele and Amanda Rist with UK HealthCare, will highlight the importance of bleed control training. Training tourniquets and artificial limbs will be available for demonstrations on how to control bleeding. Registration for a two-hour Stop the Bleed course will be on site.
National Campus Fire Safety Month is also recognized in September. The UK Fire Marshal’s Office will offer fire extinguisher training, cooking safety advice, fire safety tips and a free T-shirt giveaway. They will conduct a fire demonstration around 11:45 a.m.
“Although the focus in emergency management is preparedness for large-scale disasters, the same life-saving skills during a major disaster will also save lives during the smaller, personal-scale emergencies that happen every day,” said Clayton Oliver, emergency management specialist. “Knowing how to stop severe bleeding or extinguish a small fire or perform CPR can be the difference between a good story and a tragedy.”
