LEXINGTON, Ky. (Sept. 18, 2017) University of Kentucky Education Abroad and Exchanges (UK EA) invites all UK students interested in education abroad opportunities to attend its Funding Education Abroad Workshop from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 21, at The Hub in William T. Young Library. During the workshop, students will learn how to navigate the scholarship process, explore creative fundraising opportunities and receive tips for effective essay writing.

UK EA is committed to making education abroad financially attainable to all students by offering a variety of scholarships and resources. Last year, approximately $246,000 in UK EA scholarships alone were awarded to UK students.

Throughout the workshop, students will attend rotating sessions on:

  • budgeting and finance tips;
  • how to search for scholarships;
  • what to avoid in essays; and
  • draft essay review.

In between sessions, students will enjoy snacks, giveaways and can talk with UK EA staff members, including education abroad advisors and peer ambassadors (EAPAs). Students can enter to win a $250 flight voucher, sponsored by STA Travel. Two winners will be drawn at 6:30 p.m., students must be present at the time of drawing.

To take full advantage of the event, students are encouraged to browse scholarships and bring a draft of a scholarship essay to the workshop. A Writing Center staff member will be available to review draft essays and help students further refine personal statements.

"Preparation is key for students who are planning to participate in an education abroad program," said Niamh Minion, assistant director of Education Abroad and Exchanges. "It is not only essential for students to plan when they want to go and what classes they are going to take, but also how they are going to pay for their experience."

Important scholarship deadlines: Oct. 1 for winter and spring, Dec. 1 for embedded, Feb. 1 for summer and April 1 for fall programs.
