VACE and Health Tech - Lunch and Learn

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Oct. 13, 2017) — The University of Kentucky’s Von Allmen Center for Entrepreneurship (VACE), part of the Gatton College of Business and Economics, partnered with the UK College of Nursing recently to host a lunch and learn event around "HealthTech Innovations and The Rise of Technology in Global Healthcare."

Presenting at the event were health care entrepreneurs Brennan Royalty from Kentucky One Health and doctoral candidate Hartley Feld, from the College of Nursing. Royalty highlighted his latest product and discussed challenges with implementing new technologies in today’s health care systems. His software platform, PreVisit, allows patients to check-in before being seen by their doctor.

Feld discussed her entrepreneurial journey in the VACE Bootcamp program when she participated during the fall of 2016. Feld related how it impacted her view on business in health care and how to move forward with various ideas in the future. She is currently working with her co-innovator, Melody Ryan, from the UK College of Pharmacy, around a platform to help nonspeaking English patients identify medications in their native languages.

“We were very excited to participate with the Von Allmen Center to showcase two new health care technologies that have been developed,” said Evelyn Parrish, nursing director of accreditation and strategic outcomes. “Both platforms will provide our patients and practitioners with more accessible and efficient tools to improve health care. We look forward to partnering with VACE to showcase other technologies being developed to improve the delivery of health care.”

Mariam Gorjian, program manager of VACE, was equally enthused about the day’s activities.

“Working with the College of Nursing and highlighting the spirit of entrepreneurship in the health care arena was a great experience for our attendees,” Gorjian said. “Our goal as a center is to broaden entrepreneurial awareness throughout the various colleges at UK and to let others know that every opportunity is worth pursuing. The health care industry has adopted a variety of platforms over the last decade, and we are seeing efficiency changes in our hospitals and clinics. It’s great to have two Kentuckians achieving significant milestones in these fields.”
