LEXINGTON, Ky. (Jan. 18, 2018) Three times a year, the University of Kentucky Fine Arts Institute offers a variety of art courses designed to suit and cater to the desires of adults with a busy schedule. These beginner and advanced noncredit courses are offered once a week or in shorter workshop formats and cover a wide variety of topics from photography and sculpture to painting and jewelry-making. This year’s spring session classes will begin as early as Jan. 23, with the bulk of offerings beginning in February and March.

Weekly courses will typically meet five to 10 weeks while the workshops normally last between one to three days. They will be held this session in the UK Art and Visual Studies Building; UK Metal Arts Building; and Dancin' Dogs Designs Studio, located at 228 Lisle Industrial Ave. in Lexington.

Registration is currently open for the spring session and includes the following weekly evening courses:                                        

Ceramics

  • "Beginning Ceramics" with Jill Coldiron, 6-9 p.m. Thursdays, beginning Feb. 15, and
  • "Taking Ceramics to the Next Level" with Jill Coldiron, 6-9 p.m. Tuesdays, beginning Feb. 13.

Digital Image Editing

  • "Photoshop for Beginners" with Lennon Michalski, 6-9 p.m. Wednesdays, beginning March 28, and
  • "Lightroom for Beginners" with Rich Greissman, 6:30-9 p.m. Thursdays, beginning March 1.

Drawing

  • "Foundational Portrait Drawing" with Thomas Baker, 6:30-9 p.m. Wednesdays, beginning Feb. 21, and
  • "Explorations in Drawing" with Christine Kuhn, 6-9 p.m. Thursdays, beginning March 1.

Fiber

  • "Introduction to 3-D Feltmaking" with Jan Durham, 6-9 p.m. Wednesdays, beginning March 21.

Jewelry-Making

  • "Jewelry-Making for Beginners" with Dwayne Cobb, 6-9 p.m. Tuesdays, beginning Feb. 20.

Metalworking

  • "Metalworking" with Jeremy Colbert, 6-9 p.m. Thursdays, beginning Feb. 22.

Mixed Media

  • "Layering it On: Mixed Media Painting Techniques" with Christine Kuhn, 6-9 p.m. Wednesdays, beginning Feb. 28.

Painting

  • "Learn to Paint. Yes, You Can!" with Christine Kuhn, 6-9 p.m. Tuesdays, beginning Feb. 27, and
  • "Contemporary Painting Techniques" with Lennon Michalski, 6-9 p.m. Wednesdays, beginning April 12.

Sculpture

  • "Portrait Sculpture" with Thomas Baker, 6-9 p.m. Tuesdays, beginning Feb. 20. Registration deadline for this class is Feb. 9th to allow for the ordering of materials.

In addition, open drawing sessions will be available each week this spring semester with Brandon Smith 9 a.m.-noon Saturdays and with Anthony Roccanova 6:30-8:30 p.m. Thursdays.

Digital Image Editing

  • "Beyond the Basics in Lightroom Classic CC" with Rich Greissman, 1-5 p.m. Sunday, April 22.

Fiber

  • "Handmade Fabric" (beginner's workshop) with Laverne Zabielski, 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturdays, Feb. 24 and April 14,  
  • "Handmade Fabric" (advanced workshop) with Laverne Zabielski, 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, March 24, and
  • "Handmade Fabric: The Art of Silk Workshop” with Laverne Zabielski, 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturdays, March 31 and April 7, 21 and 28.

Photography

  • "One Day Digital Photography Workshop for Beginners" with Lennon Michalski, 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, March 3 or April 14.
