New Social Justice Book Club Discusses 'The Hate U Give'

LEXINGTON, Ky. (March 27, 2018) — "The Hate U Give" by Angie Thomas is the first book to be read and discussed in the Social Justice Book Club, sponsored  by the University of Kentucky's Center for Equality and Social Justice (CESJ), Martin Luther King Center and African American and Africana Studies program. Free copies of the book are available to students while supplies last, and the book club discussion will take place April 3.

"The Hate U Give" is a New York Times best seller that focuses on a 16-year-old female who is drawn to activism after she witnesses the shooting of her unarmed friend," said Stephanie McKee, a social psychology graduate student and graduate fellow in the CESJ. "This story was inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement. The message of this book is extremely timely, and the hope is that this will lead students to have a thoughtful dialogue around issues of social justice and equality, and ultimately challenge our way of thinking about diversity and social justice."

Free copies of the book are available at the Martin Luther King Center at 313 Blazer Dining and the CESJ office at 213 Patterson Office Tower (office hours).

The book club discussion will take place 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 3, in Room 245 White Hall Classroom Building.

The Social Justice Book Club expects to examine a new book each semester.
