Kentucky Broadcasters Honor UK's Carl Nathe

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Oct. 8, 2012) — Carl Nathe, widely known as the announcer for University of Kentucky football home games at Commonwealth Stadium, has received the Al Temple Award from the Kentucky Broadcasters Association (KBA).

The award, named in honor of Al Temple, a pioneering leader of the KBA, is presented to individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the association over an extended period.

“I am very humbled to receive this recognition from the Kentucky Broadcasters Association," Nathe said. "The organization is served by many wonderful people, and to be honored by the KBA in this manner means a lot to me."

Nathe recently began his 24th year of working for UK Public Relations and Marketing. He is involved with much of the department's radio and television output, including "UK at the Half," a two-and-a-half-minute radio feature about UK people and programs, which airs during every radio broadcast of UK football and basketball games on the UK-IMG Sports Network.

In addition, Nathe writes for UKNow, the university's online multimedia news site, and often serves as master of ceremonies at news conferences, announcements, and special events. He is an Able Toastmaster, as certified by Toastmasters International.

This season marks his 16th year as the public address announcer for UK football home games, and he will enter his 10th season next spring as the voice of Cliff Hagan Stadium for UK baseball home games. A former sports reporter and anchor at WLEX television channel 18 in Lexington, Nathe also serves as sideline reporter for selected statewide and regional live telecasts of UK women's basketball games.

He is a member of the UK Athletics Hall of Fame Selection Committee, as well as the National Association of Sports Public Address Announcers and national honor society Phi Kappa Phi.

He does volunteer work for Central Kentucky Radio Eye, a radio reading service for blind and disabled persons. Carl emcees the Alzheimer's Association's annual fund-raising event in Lexington, "Making Memories."  He serves as a lector in his church, Mary, Queen of the Holy Rosary Catholic Parish.

Nathe's involvement in KBA began 23 years ago. He served a two-year term on the board in the 1990s, as director of associate members and has chaired the Harry Barfield College Scholarship program since its inception in 1991. He is a regular participant on KBA's annual visits with members of Kentucky's Congressional delegation in Washington, D.C.

A native of Pleasantville, N.Y., Nathe is a graduate of the University of Maryland-College Park. He and his wife, Ellen, are the parents of three children, two of whom are UK graduates, while their youngest is a student at Bluegrass Community and Technical College in Lexington.
