Two Physicists Elected APS Fellows

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Dec. 16, 2009) - Two physicists at the University of Kentucky have been elected as Fellows of the American Physical Society (APS). Gang Cao and Ganpathy Murthy, both of the College of Arts and Sciences Department of Physics and Astronomy, are among the 2009 APS Fellows.

Each year, no more than one half of one percent of the Society membership is recognized by their peers for election to the status of Fellow in the American Physical Society. A total of 11 physicists at UK have been selected as fellows since 1995.

The official APS citation notes that Cao was elected a Fellow for "experimental studies of electric and magnetic single-crystal transition-metal oxides." Murthy’s selection was “for contributions to the understanding of correlated and disordered electron systems.”

The APS Fellowship Program was created to recognize members who have made advances in physics through original research and publication, or made significant innovative contributions in the application of physics to science and technology. Honored individuals may also have made significant contributions to the teaching of physics or service and participation in the activities of the society.
