Work and Family Month: Thrive in Trying Times

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Oct. 1, 2009) —  University of Kentucky staff and faculty will celebrate National Work and Family Month with more than 20 free events slated throughout October. UK Work-Life will coordinate luncheons, workshops and networking groups, but space is limited and registration is required for some events.

It begins Oct. 5, with a retirement saving and investing luncheon focusing on the new rules that can make a difference for one's financial future.

On Oct. 6 experts will help participants prepare their families for a disaster.

A free work-life resource fair on Oct. 22 includes a keynote address by William B. Irvine author of “A Guide to the Good Life.”

"Cyber-safety tips for parents" is the topic on Oct. 27.

The UK Work-Life Supervisor of the Year Award luncheon is scheduled Oct. 28 in the Student Center Ballroom.

President Lee T. Todd Jr. encouraged departments to offer scheduling flexibility where possible to allow employees to attend sessions.

"Many of this year’s Work and Family Month events are designed to underscore our ongoing commitment to providing a supportive work environment, one that helps us all serve as a positive force in the lives of others, including our family, colleagues and communities," Todd wrote in an e-mail to all employees.

"Finally, I should note that many of UK’s Work and Family Month events share a common theme: the many ways the university resources can help us not only manage, but also thrive, despite the professional and personal challenges we all face. These resources underscore our ongoing commitment to provide a supportive work environment, one that helps us all serve as a positive force in the lives of others, including our family, colleagues and communities."
