Faculty Mini-Grants Available for UK Service-Learning Projects

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Nov. 8, 2017) — University of Kentucky’s Center for Service-Learning and Civic Engagement offers mini-grants to selected faculty members who are introducing new service-learning components into their fall 2018 course curriculum.

Applications are now available for mini-grants of up to $1,000. The deadline for application is 11:59 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 30.

The purpose of the mini-grants is to promote and support service-learning activities that are being introduced for the first time in a course or redesigning a current course to integrate service-learning. Courses would need to meet UK’s service-learning definition:

"Service-learning is an integrative experience through which learners engage in thoughtfully organized actions in response to community identified assets and needs. Experiences are designed to be reciprocal exchanges of knowledge and resources accomplished through service and reflection. Learning outcomes promote academic and civic engagement and are focused on an equal balance between holistic learner development and community well-being."

Examples of potential service-learning mini-grant requests include, but are not limited to, travel costs, materials for student service projects, background checks, supplies for community agencies, community-based research costs and faculty development stipends.
