LEXINGTON, Ky. (Dec. 13, 2022) — Applications are open to University of Kentucky College of Medicine students for the third cohort of the White Coats for Black Lives fellowships.

The Department of Behavioral Science created the fellowship and is supported by its Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Council.

The fellowships were developed to enhance medical students’ understanding of health disparities, political and social inequalities and health care inequities experienced by Black Americans due to historical explicit bias and contemporary implicit bias across the health care system.

The hope is that the experience will enhance medical school training, increase the understanding of how behavioral science research can help to address health disparities and enable students to be better prepared to care for underserved Black patient populations.

Two fellows will be selected to participate in the 2023-24 cohort.

Over the course of 18 months, each fellow will work with a behavioral science faculty mentor on a research or community-engaged project addressing Black Americans' health.

Fellows receive a stipend and will present their projects to the campus community.

All current first-year medical students are eligible to apply online here. You can find more information about eligibility requirements here.

The council is accepting applications through Jan. 31, 2023 at 5 p.m. Fellows will be chosen by March 15, 2023.

Students with questions about the fellowship can contact Laurie McLouth, Ph.D., at laurie.mclouth@uky.edu or the BSC DEI Council at bscdeicouncil@uky.edu.

As the state’s flagship, land-grant institution, the University of Kentucky exists to advance the Commonwealth. We do that by preparing the next generation of leaders — placing students at the heart of everything we do — and transforming the lives of Kentuckians through education, research and creative work, service and health care. We pride ourselves on being a catalyst for breakthroughs and a force for healing, a place where ingenuity unfolds. It's all made possible by our people — visionaries, disruptors and pioneers — who make up 200 academic programs, a $476.5 million research and development enterprise and a world-class medical center, all on one campus.

In 2022, UK was ranked by Forbes as one of the “Best Employers for New Grads” and named a “Diversity Champion” by INSIGHT into Diversity, a testament to our commitment to advance Kentucky and create a community of belonging for everyone. While our mission looks different in many ways than it did in 1865, the vision of service to our Commonwealth and the world remains the same. We are the University for Kentucky.
